January Transfer Picks Empty January Transfer Picks

Post by mangler Tue Dec 29, 2009 10:42 am

This may have been done already, but if so, I have missed it. I'm extremely bored sat waiting for 6.30 to roll around, so...

What positions do we need to strengthen, and who (realistically) would you hope we will be signing to fill the gaps in January?

A proper centre-back is an obvious one, Kilgallon has been mentioned and seems a viable option to me... especially if we can sellotape together both Zat Knight and Shittu and send them to Sheffield in return.

I really hope that we're gonna tie up Klasnic on a permanent deal, although Megson has said that is on ice until the summer. That said, there was a rumour last summer that we were sniffing around Jermaine Beckford at Leeds... I wonder if there is anything in that one as Beckford's contract runs out at the end of this season.
Also, I've seen a few goals that his team-mate - Snodgrass - has scored lately, and he has seemed pretty useful. Obviously it's only in League One, but as he's only 22 he might be worth a look.

Think Killgallon is a must but, despite reports, I don't think Sheff United are letting him go on the cheap so i doubt 1m will do. 3m perhaps? Newcastle are lurking though. For the time being at least, we are the Premiership club although you could say that it is as likely, perhaps more likely, that they'll be playing Premiership football next season. He might want a Championship winners medal too.

Think we should go for O'Hara from Spurs, even if it's a loan deal. Great young player.

Beckford, I'd be happy enough with although I'd rather speak to him now and get him in the summer for nothing.

I don't think we are that far away from a half decent first 11 and bench.

If we have to sell to buy, I'd try and offload Elmander, Riga, Shittu, Hunt, Vaz Te if possible. None of which are likely to play any time soon, Elmander aside, and they're just taking up wages which could be better spent elsewhere.

If we can get 1-2m each with 4m for Elmander, even better.

I'd add Gavin McCann to that list. Don't forget that Megson tried shifting both him and Shittu to Pompey in the summer.

I hate us carrying loads of dead wood, and we have built up a stockpile again so it would be nice to clear the decks. Hopefully Megson has had his fingers burned after signing Zat Knight, and will be a bit more thorough in his scouting before making any new buys.

Yeah, McCann can leave, but with my thanks. I wouldn't say he is as bad as most people make out and he has certaiunly contributed a lot more to BWFC than some.

That said, I much prefer Basham to push Muamba for a place and with Davis to come back next season, McCann is expendable.

Sorry Gavin. Much love x x x x x x
