man utd goal cheat!
So, i know its a bit late but...
did anyone see uniteds goal v brum at the weekend.
to summarize,
the ball was played in low across the face of goal, the linesman thought the united player was offside, the ball deflected of a birmingham player 2 yards from goal as he attempted to clear it and put it into his own net, the flag went up for off side and the ref blew his whistle and ruled the goal out.
the players then all ran over and complained to the ref and the linesman, the ref then blew his whistle again and pointed to the centre spot, he let the goal stand.
WAS IT RIGHT?
the match of the day pundits said, it doesnt matter where anyone was stood because it was an own goal. if the united player didnt touch it it doesnt matter.
I think they are wrong.
When the ball was played across and deflected in, the linesman flagged offside and the ref gave the decision as offside. He cant then change it surely.
If the ball is played forward to a player and the linesman flags offside the red blow his whistle immediately while the player is still running onto it, he doesnt wait to see what happens.
if the player heard the whistle but carried on running and put the ball in the net it wouldnt count if even if the linesman had a change of heart about if it was on or offside. (ie realised it was a mistake to flag) the decision has already happened.
Anyone get me?

Re: man utd goal cheat!
It didn't matter anyway, because Rooney wasn't offside... I couldn't understand why no-one bothered to make that point, as it meant the resulting bollox debate was irrelevant anyway.
Plus it was an own-goal.
By hook or by crook the officials got the right decision.

There were only two games. If they had pointed out that Rooney wasn't offside, they'd have had even less to talk about!

Re: man utd goal cheat!
I know he was offside anyway, and it was the rigt decision in the end but that is not the point. They didnt know that at the time, they didnt let the goal stand because they decided he was onside.
They let it stand becasue they thought it was ok to change their minds, even though they THOUGHT rooney was offside.
So, my point is not about weather they reached the correct decision in the end.
Its about weather or not, after effectively stopping the game for an offside, they can then change the decision based on what happened a few seconds later.

Man utd cheat, shock horror no!
The ironic thing is that while they as usual have been cheating on the pitch, so very strange looking men, who come from across the sea, allegedly the United States, but I think middle earth is more likely have been cheating the club and it's fans out of all their money, genius. Unfortunately they have gone a bit far and if UEFA get this new rule through, the reds are going bankrupt! Now that will be a party.

There was no decision made initially; the linesman made a call that Rooney was offside - the ref didn't blow his whistle to give offside. Because the linesman had flagged, the ref went over and they discussed what had happened and the ref made the decision for the goal to stand.
So they didn't change the decision - the ref gave a goal, then noticed the flag up. They discussed it and decided that the goal should stand. That's it.

Re: man utd goal cheat!
But in that case rooney would be interfering, no?
You cant say it does not matter because he didnt touch it, there are a million times the game is stopped before the offside player touches the ball.
And if it did not matter, then why, if the ball is played over the top to a striker stood offside, the defender mis-heads it, toward goal instead of away from goal, the striker runs onto it. Why does the ref blow his whistle then? They say its because the striker was interfering by making the defender have to go for the ball.
